Frequently-Cited Treaties and Other International Instruments

Online list of the most frequently cited treaties in law review articles,aimed at law students and compiled by Mary Rumsey, Foreign, Comparative and International Law Librarian at the University of Minnesota Law School. The treaties are grouped into eight categories: general international law; human rights law; environmental law; European Union law; trade and economic law; criminal law; and intellectual property law.

Antarctic Treaty

This section of the British Antarctic Survey website provides background information and full-text copies of the Antarctic Treaty 1959 and related agreements including the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals (1972), Agreed Measures for the Conservation of Antarctic Fauna and Flora (1964), the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (1980) and the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (1991). This collection of international agreements is known as the Antarctic Treaty System.

Peace Agreements Digital Collection

The Peace Agreements Digital Collection aims to provide free access to all peace treaties signed since 1989, in both inter- and intra-state conflicts. The collection is maintained by the Jeannette Rankin Program as part of the Margarita S. Studemeister Digital Library in International Conflict Management. It is possible to browse the collection by continent and nation, or to search by key word.

Canadian Tax Treaties

This webpage, provided by the Canadian Department of Finance, lists recent changes to treaties and provides a collection of  tax treaties in force, arranged by country. Information is also given about treaties that are not yet in force and treaties that are under negotiation. 

Bayefsky.com

Professor A.F. Bayefsky of York University, Toronto, and a team of researchers have produced this site. Its aim is to enhance the implementation of the human rights legal standards of the United Nations and to increase access to these documents by making materials associated with the treaty system available in electronic and user-friendly form.

International Civil Aviation Organization: Treaty Collection

Treaty information compiled by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and made available on its website. Includes the DAGMAR database of aeronautical agreements and arrangements (bilateral and multilateral) registered with ICAO. DAGMAR gives title, date of signature, parties and other details of each treaty, but not the text of the treaty itself. The Treaty Collection also provides lists of party and status information for multilateral air agreements, the text of recent treaties, ICAO Assembly resolutions relating to treaty ratification and other information.

Geneva Conventions and Commentaries

Section of the International Committee of the Red Cross website devoted to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their protocols. The four Conventions are: Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field; Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of Wounded, Sick and Shipwrecked Members of Armed Forces at Sea; Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War; and Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel.

Text of an agreement signed between the Holy See and the State of Israel, resulting from the work of the Bilateral Permanent Working Commission set up in July, 1992. The aim of the agreement is to provide basis for relations between the two states. The web page is hosted by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and can be viewed in English and Spanish.

Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

Official website of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention (Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction). The site presents the full text of the Convention, together with supporting information and related international agreements. Additional documents include reports, news and facts and figures. The entire series of Chemical Disarmament Quarterly is also available.
