Legal system in Brunei Darussalam

Online version of a chapter from "ASEAN Legal Systems" produced by the ASEAN Law Association. Provides historical background and covers sources of law, the governmental and court systems, criminal and civil procedures and information relating to the legal profession and legal education in Brunei. Other chapters currently available online describe the legal systems in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam.

ASEAN Law Association

Website of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Law Association, a non-governmental professional organisation which brings together members of the legal profession in ASEAN countries. The site provides historical and organisational information about the ALA. Publications and speeches of members from the various countries can be freely downloaded.

Indonesian legal system and legal research

Online guide to the Indonesian legal system, by law graduate Alamo D. Laiman and others, and updated by Dewi Savitri Reni who works at Indonesian law firm Soewito Suhardiman Eddymurthy Kardono. The guide was published in 2009 (and updated in 2015) on New York University's Globalex website. It provides background and historical information about Indonesia and its legal system, with references and links to further resources. There is an outline of the governmental system, together with sections providing information on the courts system, sources of law and the legal profession.

First-tier Tribunal (Tax)

Website of the Tax Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal, which hears appeals against decisions relating to tax made by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Taxes covered include income tax, corporation tax, national insurance contributions, VAT, custom duties, excise duties and landfill tax. The website explains the role and organisation of the Tribunal and gives guidance on making an appeal including providing the appropriate forms to download. Tribunal decisions can be downloaded from the site in full text back to 2002.

National Association of Women and the Law

Website of the National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) a non-profit organisation established in 1974 to promote equality for women in Canada. The site has background information about the organisation, its aims and events. Research reports, briefs, open letters to government and press releases are provided in full text (PDF) on the site. These are focused on key issues of concern including women and the family, work and equality, social and economic rights, violence against women, immigration and refugee law and women's human rights.

Dubai Courts

Official website of the Dubai Courts. The site provides a history of the court system and a diagram illustrating the structure of the courts in Dubai. There is an outline of the legal system, covering the the Court of First Instance, Court of Appeal and Court of Cassation. A list of court hearings and a directory of Dubai lawyers are available and there is a database of judgments from 2010 onwards. The site is in Arabic and English.

United Arab Emirates E-Legal Portal

The United Arab Emirates E-Legal Portal forms part of the UAE Ministry of Justice website. The site includes a collection of full text legislation arranged by subject including environment, housing, security, insurance, finance, telecommunications and weapons. There is also a copy of the UAE Constitution. The collection is presented in English as well as Arabic and can be searched by keyword. Other resources on the site are provided in Arabic only. These include international treaties, civil and criminal High Court decisions and other official publications and consultations.

Satellites and Law

Satellites and Law is a research programme based at the Centre for Law and the Environment at University College London. The programme deals with issues surrounding the use of satellites for monitoring and enforcing environmental laws. The site has information on research projects taking place looking at the use of satellites in legal systems, privacy issues in using satellite imagery in courts and national and international experience of using satellite imagery as a legal monitoring and compliance tool.

Advertising Law and Ethics

Website providing information and links to resources dealing with advertising law and ethics in the United States. The site is made freely available by the College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. The site is arranged by topic covering a range of issues relevant to advertising law. These include children, deception, tobacco and alcohol advertising, self regulation, telemarketing, privacy and unfairness. Each section contains background information and external links to organisations and full text legislation.

Law Donut

The Law Donut web resource provides practical legal information aimed at small businesses. Information on the site is arranged by topic including finding, buying and selling a business, insolvency, trading law, remuneration and pensions, intellectual property and premises. Each section gives an overview to the law in that area along with practical advice and guidance. There is a more detailed section on employment law for small businesses covering issues such as health and safety, discipline and grievance, recruiting and managing staff and employment contracts.
