Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research

The Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research (ICPR) is a research organisation based at Birkbeck, University of London. ICPR focuses on justice issues including policing and the policed, courts and the judicial process and prisons and the use of imprisonment. There is information about current and completed research projects with links to publications. These cover: youth justice, communities, crime and victims of crime, rehabilitation, drugs alcohol and criminal justice and race, ethnicity and gender.

Singapore Law Watch

Singapore Law Watch is a free legal news service provided by the Singapore Academy of Law, a membership organisation for the legal profession in Singapore. The site is updated daily covering news and legal developments in Singapore. Links are given to the latest judgements from the Court of Appeal, High Court, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore and the Tax Boards and to legislation published in the last three months.

World Prison Brief

Website of World Prison Brief a database providing free access to information on prison systems around the world. The resource is part of the Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research’s (Birkbeck, University of London) World Prison Research Programme. Information is arranged by country and includes contact details of the government department responsible for prisons, figures for the prison population, the percentage of female, foreign and juvenile prisoners and prison population trends.

European Lawyers Foundation

The European Lawyers Foundation (ELF) is a network of law societies and bars in Europe which is focused on training. Current projects include an exchange scheme for lawyers in Europe to enhance practical knowledge of other European legal systems, training on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, EU Criminal Law, EU asylum and immigration law and capacity building for lawyers involved with cases taken to the ICC. ELF publications can be freely downloaded from the site.

Fair Trials

Fair Trials is an NGO which campaigns for fairness, equality and justice including the right to a fair trial in Europe, Latin America, the UK and the US. The site outlines Fair Trials’ campaigns which include protecting the rights of accused people, the right to counsel, use of pre-trial detention and safeguards for plea bargaining. Free resources on the site include publications, case studies, information, toolkits and legal news which can be searched by issue, region or country. 

LawInSport

The LawInSport website is a subscription resource compiled by legal practitioners and academics providing expert analysis, commentary and news on legal developments in sport. There are sections covering anti-corruption, anti-doping, intellectual property, media law and key cases. There are also podcasts, videos and events. Parts of the site are restricted to subscribers only.

European Criminal Bar Association

The European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA) is an independent organisation of specialist defence lawyers based in Council of Europe countries. The aim of the ECBA is to promote “the fundamental rights of persons under criminal investigation, suspects, accused and convicted persons”. Details of working groups covering e-evidence, human rights, extradition and European Arrest Warrant and anti-corruption in Europe are given on the site along with their working documents.

Swiss Arbitration

The Swiss Arbitration website is produced by the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA) and brings together key resources relating to arbitration in Switzerland. There is information about the ASA - a membership organisation and arbitration think tank - and the Swiss Arbitration Centre which provides arbitration and mediation services worldwide.

Talking Law Podcast

Podcast in which barrister Sally Penni interviews leading UK lawyers, with themes including career development, diversity and wellbeing. The episodes are available on the website of Women in the Law UK, but both male and female lawyers are featured. Listeners can subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Spotify.

Laws.Africa

Laws.Africa is a non-profit organisation working with African governments to make African legislation and cases available for free online. Its website provides technical information and an API developer guide; it also offers case studies, best practice guidance for publishing legal documentation online and information about naming conventions for documents.
