Legal Information in Norway, Written and Electronic Sources

An online research guide to Norwegian legal sources and legal literature written by Pal A. Bertnes at the Faculty of Law Library, University of Oslo. The guide is intended for English-speaking law students at Oslo University. It includes an introduction to the Norwegian legal system, finding primary and secondary legal sources, a guide to the law library at the University of Oslo, useful contacts in Norway and a bibliography. There is background information to the history of Norwegian law, the courts of justice and recommended introductory works on the legal system.

World Organization Against Torture

The World Organization Against Torture is a non-profit human rights advocacy group described as the "main coalition of international non-governmental organisations (NGO) fighting against torture, summary executions, enforced disappearances and all other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment".The website provides access to policy documents, reports and events covering their main programme areas. These include the rights of the child, violence against women, assistance to victims and addressing the economic, social and cultural causes of torture.

esp@cenet is a free gateway to a patents search engine which can find UK, European, US and Japanese patent applications using one single search form. The esp@cenet quick search option defaults to the Worldwide database where users can search by words in the title or abstract or persons or organisations. Users can also conduct searches by number, classification or a range of parameters using the advanced search option. If available, the original application along with a description of the invention and drawings are made freely available online.

Environmental Law Foundation

The Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) is a national UK charity which links communities and individuals to legal and technical experts who can provide advice and information on how the law can help resolve environmental problems. ELF was established in 1992 and consists of a network of environmental solicitors, barristers, consultants and academics, who provide free initial advice and assistance and then, if required, further support on either a free, at cost or reduced-fee rate.

Law Centres Federation

Website of the Law Centres Federation (LCF) the co-ordinating body for law centres in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The site includes background information about the LCF and the history and development of law centres and access to justice. Guidance is given to the work of the law centres along with contact details to all law centres arranged by region. Policy and research documents, leaflets and copies of the LCF newsletter are also provided. Parts of the site are restricted to members only.

This subscription site is managed by GMG Verlag AG and provides a full-text selection of the main Liechtenstein legislation accompanied by an index to all the subject areas covered. The Acts have index numbers which enable the user to see where they fit in to the overall range of legislation. All texts are in German. A search engine enables users to retrieve Acts using key terms and guidelines. Examples are given to assist with search techniques. The site content is current to date and individual Acts include subsequent amendments.

Great Britain-China Centre

The Great Britain-China Centre exists to promote understanding between Britain and China, focusing in particular on legal and judicial reform. The website has information on projects dealing with human rights reporting, the police, judicial studies training and the death penalty. The Centre's journal, the China Review, is available on the site from 2006 onwards.

Street Law Online

Street Law Online is a non-profit organisation based in the United States, dedicated to promoting learning about law, democracy and human rights. Street Law provides practical legal education materials aimed at schools, juvenile justice facilities and community based organisations. Programs cover youth courts, juvenile justice and parents and the law and include sample materials, rationales, and curricula. Details of publications on street law include some abstracts, tables of contents and some sample lessons. An online newsletter gives updates on trainings, events and resources.

Code of Canon Law

Online version of the Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law, provided by IntraText, an open-access digital library. The Code is the most recent compilation of ecclesiastical law for the Roman Catholic church, revised in 1983 and made up of 1,752 canons in 7 books. Canon law is the law of the Church's courts and includes rules for the governance and regulation of the clergy and the church. The website includes concordances and word lists which can be ordered alphabetically or by frequency of occurrence.
