The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted in 1987 and has been amended several times since. The Protocol followed the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (1985). It aimed to reduce and eventually eliminate the emissions of man-made ozone depleting substances. This convention was the first general treaty for the protection of the ozone layer.
