Guide to Panama’s Legal System and Research

Guide to the legal system of Panama, by Panamanian lawyers Alvaro Aguilar-Alfu and Kedar Rudy. The research guide was published in 2011 on the Globalex website, which is run by the Hauser Global Law School Program at New York University. It covers the development of the legal system, Panamanian legal concepts and the court system and government of Panama. Links are provided to legal and governmental websites for the jurisdiction.

Death Penalty Worldwide

This website provides information and analysis relating to death penalty law and practice in around 90 countries. It was established by Professor Sandra Babcock of the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern Law School's Bluhm Legal Clinic in the US, in partnership with the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty. The site’s main component is the Death Penalty Database, covering capital offences; treaty ratifications; national and international cases; methods of execution; statistics on death sentences and executions; and other topics.

ICL - Germany Index

Part of the ICL (International Constitutional Law) project managed by the University of Bern, Switzerland. Provides an unofficial English-language translation of the German Constitution, which is known by the name Grundgesetz (Basic Law). It includes amendments made up to and including the 29th amendment of July 29th 2009.

Justiz und NS-Verbrechen

The site presents a systematic overview of the cases heard and sentences passed for Nazi Crimes both in East and West Germany. The content is taken from the printed series “Justiz und NS Verbrechen: Sammlung Deutscher Strafurteile wegen nationalsozialistischer Tötungsverbrechen” which began publication in 1945 and is still ongoing. The trials featured are the National Socialist homicidal trials. It is currently possible to browse using different entry points eg. defendants, victims or category of crime.

Latin American Government Documents Archive

The Latin American Government Documents Archive (LAGDA) is one of several resources managed by the Latin American Web Archiving Project, which is based at the University of Texas Libraries. Its aim is to preserve and make available archives of websites from the governments of 18 Latin American countries. The archived sites include documents and video and audio recordings. The records available start in 2005-6 and the project is ongoing. The materials can be selected from a list according to jurisdiction and government department and can also be searched by keywords.

Judicial Conduct Investigations Office

The official website for the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO). The JCIO took over the responsibilities of the Office for Judicial Complaints (OJC) in 2013. The website provides information on the role of the JCIO, how to make a complaint about the personal conduct of judicial office holders, relevant rules and regulations, and JCIO/OJC annual reports from 2006. Disciplinary statements are available on the website.

Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman

This section of the UK Ministry of Justice website describes the work of the independent Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman. It includes information about making a complaints regarding the appointments process or the handling of matters involving the conduct of judges. Includes information leaflets and a complaints form. There is also a link to the Ombudsman’s latest annual report (under ‘Corporate Reports’), which includes statistics and case studies.

Faculty Office

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Faculty Office is responsible for regulating notaries in England and Wales. Its website provides the current notarial rules and a list of notaries, together with information about becoming a notary.

Socialist Lawyer

The journal of the London-based Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, an association independent of any political party. The journal is available the Society’s website from issue 42 (November 2005) onwards. It covers legal developments in the UK and overseas, with a focus on civil liberties and social justice. Past issues of the journal are provided in full, in pdf format, while access to the current issue is limited to selected articles.
