UK Supreme Court blog

This blog was set up in June 2009, a few months before the UK Supreme Court opened. Written by lawyers at Matrix Chambers and Olswang LLP, it provides news and commentary on the Supreme Court and its judgments, with links to original sources including articles, speeches, podcasts, cases and press articles. Links are given to judgments and upcoming hearings of the Court, and to related websites.

First-tier Tribunal (Tax)

Website of the Tax Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal which hears appeals against decisions relating to tax made by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Taxes covered include income tax, corporation tax, national insurance contributions, VAT, custom duties, excise duties and landfill tax. The website explains the role and organisation of the Tribunal and gives guidance on making an appeal including providing the appropriate forms to download. Tribunal decisions can be downloaded from the site in full text back to 2002.

Trust Law Committee

The Trust Law Committee is an organisation of academics and practitioners devoted to improving the law of trusts in England and Wales. The organisation was set up in 1994 and its website is hosted at King's College, London. The site gives the names of members of the Committee and outlines the process that has to be undergone to improve the law. Consultation papers and reports published by the Committee can be freely downloaded from the site.

Satellites and Law

Satellites and Law is a research programme based at the Centre for Law and the Environment at University College London. The programme deals with issues surrounding the use of satellites for monitoring and enforcing environmental laws. The site has information on research projects taking place looking at the use of satellites in legal systems, privacy issues in using satellite imagery in courts and national and international experience of using satellite imagery as a legal monitoring and compliance tool.

Law Donut

The Law Donut web resource provides practical legal information aimed at small businesses. Information on the site is arranged by topic including finding, buying and selling a business, insolvency, trading law, remuneration and pensions, intellectual property and premises. Each section gives an overview to the law in that area along with practical advice and guidance. There is a more detailed section on employment law for small businesses covering issues such as health and safety, discipline and grievance, recruiting and managing staff and employment contracts.

Disease-i

Disease-i is a subscription website provided by Weightmans, a UK-based firm of solicitors. The site is intended for lawyers dealing with disease claims and provides guidance and background information on a range of related issues. The section headed Legal Principles covers the existence of a duty of care, forseeability, causation and contributory negligence. Other legal topics include insurance histories and coverage, limitation and quantum.

Legal History of Australia and the United Kingdom

A research guide on the legal history of Australia and the UK created and maintained by the Law Library at Melbourne Law School. Links are given to legal history resources and materials held in collections at the University of Melbourne. There are sections including legal history blogs, resources focusing on Australia and the Common Law Tradition and legal history societies and collections.

 

Centre for Competition Law and Policy

Website of the Centre for Competition Law and Policy (CCLP) at the University of Oxford. Teaching and research focuses on competition regulation in the UK, EU and US, as well international aspects of competition law and antitrust economics. Training programmes on competition law and policy are offered to practitioners, judges, academics and students. The site has profiles of staff and details of conferences, workshops and lectures taking place at the CCLP.

Hamlyn Lectures

This website provides free access to the Hamlyn Lectures, a collection of public lectures by judges, legal academics, practitioners and other eminent speakers. The lectures are made available by the Hamlyn Trust, a charity supporting public legal education in the United Kingdom, and hosted on the website of the University of Exeter, School of Law. This collection has selected lectures delivered from 1949 to 2004 including contributions from Lord Denning, Lord Devlin, Lord Scarman, Henry Cecil, Lord Hailsham and Lord Woolf.

Law and Regulation

Website of the Business Law Department of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) providing information on legal and regulatory issues affecting accountants. There is a section on company law, providing guidance on the Companies Act 2006 with links to ministerial statements, government guidance, a copy of the Act and useful links. The Business Crime and Misconduct section includes guidance for accountants on bribery, corruption and fraud, unlicensed arms dealing and criminal cartels.
