The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) represents lawyers in New York State and publishes a variety of documents and information on this site for its members and for the public. The site has organisational information including details of committees and sections such as environmental law, business law and criminal law. Services for the public include lawyer referral, information on legal aid (pro bono), and steps to take if you have a grievance with your attorney and a selection of free pamphlets to download providing brief overviews of aspects of New York State law.

International Law Institute

The International Law Institute is a non-profit research and educational institution based in Washington, DC, USA. It organises training programmes on different aspects of law, including international law, trade law, international development, and the US legal system. A schedule of forthcoming training programmes is available, with details of course content and intended participants and costs. Training topics include evaluation systems, procurement, and legal drafting. An annual orientation course on the US legal system is also publicised.

Drafting Legal Documents

A guide to legal writing, from the Office of the Federal Register, US National Archives and Records Administration. The guide is a sequence of linked topics on the basics of writing regulatory documents which include arrangement, headings, definitions, ambiguity, principles of clear writing and grammar. In addition, the site presents some links to plain language resources and a PDF copy of the Federal Register Document Drafting Handbook 1998 with amendments.

Maine State Legislature. Office of the Revisor of Statutes

The Office of the Revisor of Statutes of Maine State Legislature is responsible for the drafting and editing of legislation for the state of Maine in the United States. The Revisor's Office also maintains a database of statutes, and publishes the statutes online. This site publishes two documents: the Revisor's Report which details non-substantive changes to the database of statutes (e.g.

Canon Law

Article on canon law, as published in the Catholic Encyclopedia online, made available on the New Advent website. The article was written by A. Boudinhon, and transcribed by David DeWolf. It discusses the differences between canon law and ecclesiastical law, and describes the sources and divisions of the body of laws of the Christian Church. It outlines the historical development of collections of canon law texts from the early Christian Church to modern times, and describes the different types of text (bulls, briefs, concordats, etc).

Sentencing Project:

The Sentencing Project is an independent US organisation founded in 1986 to promote "reforms in sentencing law and practice, and alternatives to incarceration".The site has sections focusing on sentencing policy, incarceration, racial disparity, offender disenfranchisement, drug policies and women in the justice system. Each section provides access to full text reports, briefing sheets, educational materials and news items. There is a collection of advocacy materials and statistics arranged by state.

Journal of International Wildlife Law & Policy

Web pages of the Journal of International Wildlife Law & Policy, published by Taylor and Francis and produced in conjunction with the Whittier Law School, Los Angeles. The journal seeks to address the legal and political issues relating to humans' interrelationship with, and management of, wildlife, their habitats and the biosphere. Contents lists with abstracts are available from volume 1 (1998) to the current issue; from 2003 onwards it is also possible to buy individual articles or journal issues online.

LLRX.com (Law Library Resource Exchange) is a free legal technology web journal for legal information professionals. LLRX is edited by Sabrina Pacifici, adjunct professor at the University of Maryland College for Information Studies and Center for Information Policy, and founder and editor of the legal blog, beSpacific. LLRX provides resource guides, feature articles and columns on legal research and technology issues. Articles can be browsed by date, author, column or subject.

Task Force on Life and the Law

Web pages of the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, on the website of the State's Department of Health. The Task Force was formed in 1985, and convenes to consider important public policy issues to do with advances in medicine. A fact sheet on the website outlines the Task Force's mandate, and how its recommendations have had an impact on US legislation and court decisions.
