First Amendment Handbook

Description:

Electronic version of a handbook outlining provisions and interpretations of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The First Amendment protects freedom of religion, free speech, free press and rights of assembly and petition in the United States. The Amendment declares that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." The handbook is made freely available on the Internet by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a non profit organisation dedicated to providing free legal help to journalists and news organisations in the USA. The online handbook is arranged in chapters with links from a table of contents. Chapters look at matters such as: libel, invasion of privacy, confidential information, gag orders, access to courts, freedom of information acts and copyright. The site also gives details on how to purchase print copies of the handbook.
