European Union legal materials: an infrequent user's guide

Guide to European Union legal information, written by Duncan E. Alford, Associate Dean for the Law Library and Associate Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law. The guide was published in 2005 (and updated in 2016 by Alyson Drake of the Texas Tech University School of Law Library) on New York University law school's Globalex website. The author gives a brief overview of the European Union, its official websites and principal institutions. There is a reading list of recommended introductions to EU law, dictionaries and directories.

Activities of the European Union: Energy

This section of the EU's Europa website gives a concise overview of EU energy policy and acts as a gateway to relevant information and documentation on EU websites. There are links to the European Commission's Energy and Transport Directorate-General, the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council's press releases and other web pages of interest. Legislation, statistics, press releases, the General Report on the Activities of the European Union and other publications are available.

Details of priced publications are also given. There are links to policy consultations and calls for tenders. Other sections include information and legislation relating to specific energy sources such as coal, oil and gas.

EU Bookshop

EU Bookshop is run by the Office for Official Publications of the European Union (also known as the Publications Office). It provides free access to the full text of all EU official publications issued since 1952. This includes all reports, documents and yearbooks from the key EU institutions and Agencies, covering all aspects of EU domestic and foreign policy, including issues relating to the EURO, EU accession and enlargement, legislation and political reports. Users can search or browse the website.

Bar European Group

Website of the Bar European Group (BEG), a specialist bar association of the Bar of England and Wales relevant for those practising or interested in European law and issues surrounding the European Union. The site gives information about BEG's activities, details of events and other relevant material. The site also has membership information and a page of related Web links.

Legal Service of the European Commission

The Legal Service of the European Commission is the in-house legal adviser to the Commission. Its functions include drafting legislation and representing the Commission in the courts. The Legal Service is also responsible for coordinating the official codification of Community legislation. The website gives background information about the role and structure of the Legal Service, including an organisation chart and links to official documents and related organisations. It is available in English, French and German.

Justice and Home Affairs Council

The Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) brings together justice and interior ministers from the EU member states to make collective decisions on justice and home affairs policy; it is one of the configurations of the Council of the European Union. This page of the Council of the European Union's website introduces the JHA and provides links to information about important current policy areas. Dates of forthcoming meetings are also listed.

European Judicial Atlas in Civil Matters

The European Judicial Atlas in Civil Matters is an EU website providing information for those involved in cross-border litigation in Europe. The site includes contact details for courts in EU member states and guidance relating to the service of documents, taking of evidence and the recognition and enforcement of judgments. There is a collection of forms that can be completed online. Although the site is concerned with civil and commercial litigation, there is also a link to information about compensation for victims of crime.
