Produced by the Information Unit for Conventions (IUC) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this site maintains information on the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal. The Basel Convention was adopted in 1989 and entered into force on 5 May 1992. The treaty strictly regulates the transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and provides obligations to its Parties to ensure that such wastes are managed and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. The text of the Convention is available, together with decisions and reports of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (COP), press releases and a newsletter, a list of publications and legal, technical and scientific documents relating to the Convention.
