Index to 19th Century French Political Trials from the Labadie Collection

Description:

Index to a collection of more than 400 verbatim reports of trials against leaders of revolts, journalists and their editors, which took place in France during the 19th century. The reports are part of the Labadie Collection at the Special Collections Library of the University of Michigan and the index is published on the Library's website. The trials provide a rare insight into the suppression of republican, socialist and anarchist movements by the French government "because the courtroom was the one place where censorship was not practised, the defendants quoted into the record much that has been otherwise lost as text". Entries in the index consist of trial year, volume number, trial number and a trial summary: users should be aware that, although the website and index are in English, the trial summaries are in French. There are 2 search options: a simple search that looks for a keyword or phrase, and an advanced search where terms can be combined and fields searched and year of publication can be limited. Entries can also be browsed in chronological order, from 1801 to 1879. The site is freely accessible in HTML and includes a page of searching help and a detailed history of the Labadie collection.
