The collection comprises historical records from 1804 to 1875 including civil, criminal and chancery cases. The website provides access to case files dealing with specific subjects which have been made freely available online as a searchable database. These are the Lewis and Clark/Corps of Discovery Case Files and the Freedom Suits Case Files, 1814-1860 documenting cases of people held in slavery within the St. Louis area who petitioned for their freedom. The database can be searched by plaintiff, defendant, action, year, and case notes with records providing case summaries, citations and a digital image of the original records. The site provides background information to the documentation and to the most famous cases included in the collection along with a bibliography of related books and articles and other Web-based materials.
