How to Find Free Case Law Online

This is a Law Library of Congress research guide providing guidance on using the internet to identify free US cases. The guide was written in 2018 (and updated in 2019) by Barbara Bavis, Bibliographic and Research Instruction Librarian,  and Robert Brammer, Senior Legal Information Specialist at the Law Library of Congress. The guide focuses on Google Scholar, CourtListener, FindLaw, Justia, and the Public Library of Law (PLoL) website.

Global Brand Database

The Global Brand Database is an online resource made freely available by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It is intended to be the first step in researching whether a trade mark already exists. The database includes trademarks, appellations of origin, armorial bearings, flags and other state emblems protected in various countries around the world. The names, abbreviations and emblems of intergovernmental organisations are also included.

Differentiating International Terrorism and ‘Peoples’: Struggles for Self-Determination

Online article exploring the distinction between international terrorism and self-determination, written by Elizabeth Chadwick, a retired British academic and writer. The guide was published in 2019 on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The article looks at how the terms ‘terrorism’  and ‘self determination’ have been defined and includes a bibliography of relevant sources. Links are given to online resources where available. 

Erskine May

The UK Parliament website provides free access to the current edition of Erskine May’s Treatise on the Law, Privileges, Proceedings and Usage of Parliament, the preeminent reference book on all aspects of UK parliamentary procedure. The book can be searched by key word, browsed by part and chapter, or accessed via the index.

Australian Federal Relations Architecture

Website of the Australian Federal Relations Architecture an intergovernmental forum where Commonwealth, state and territory ministers can meet to manage matters of national significance or issues that need co-ordinated action by all Australian governments. The National Cabinet is a forum for the Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers and there are Ministerial Councils where Commonwealth, state and territory ministers work collaboratively on issues specific to their portfolio areas through intergovernmental meetings.

Australasian Parliamentary Counsel's Committee

Website of the Australasian Parliamentary Counsel's Committee (PCC), a discussion forum for the development of legislation. The PCC consists of the heads of the offices of Parliamentary Counsel for the Australian Commonwealth, the States, the ACT, the Northern Territory and New Zealand. PCC publications on national uniform legislation and a list of harmonised laws are available on the site, together with a page of links to sites providing legislation for common law jurisdictions. Parts of the site are password-protected. 

Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law

The Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM) is a Ukrainian think tank made up of media and human rights lawyers and policy experts. CEDEM is concerned with the protection of freedom of speech and the human rights of journalists. Its work includes reform of media laws, support to citizens involved with freedom of information cases, and the provision of courses on media law in Ukraine. The Library section of the site provides summaries of Ukrainian media legislation. The site can be viewed in English or Ukrainian.

Legislation of Ukraine

This site is compiled by Verkhovna Rada (the parliament) of Ukraine and provides access to a database of full-text Ukrainian legislation. The database can be searched by keyword, type, date and government department. The New Acts page lists legal instruments by date and issuing authority (Parliament, President, and so on); it can be browsed by date, month and other criteria. The site hasd Ukrainian, Russian and English interfaces, but Ukrainian search terms must be used, as the legislation is provided in Ukrainian only.

The Human Right to Education Research with an Annotated Bibliography

Online article and bibliography on the human right to education written by Jootaek Lee who is  assistant professor and librarian at Rutgers Law School in the United States. The article was published in 2021 on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The article looks at international instruments relating to the right to education and includes an annotated bibliography of articles, reports and other materials aimed at scholars and practitioners.
