Talking Law Podcast

Podcast in which barrister Sally Penni interviews leading UK lawyers, with themes including career development, diversity and wellbeing. The episodes are available on the website of Women in the Law UK, but both male and female lawyers are featured. Listeners can subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Spotify.

Lawyer Portal

The Lawyer Portal is a free resource provided by The Career Portal, in partnership with the Bar Council and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, and aimed at anyone considering a career in law. The site has free guides covering topics of interest to sixth formers, university students and graduates including law apprenticeships, choosing a university course, work experience and pupillage. These are written by professional lawyers and education experts. The site also offers career tips, details of events, free learning materials and teachers’ guides.

Public Defender Service

The Public Defender Service (PDS) is a department of the Legal Aid Agency providing a range of criminal defence services including advice and representation at the police station or magistrates court through to advocacy in the higher courts. The PDS was established in 2001 as the first salaried criminal defence service in England and Wales and provides legal aided defence representation in all types of criminal cases.

Senior Courts Costs Office

Website of the Senior Courts Costs Office which is part of the High Court of Justice. The Office assesses the costs and expenses incurred in civil litigation and considers issues such as how much a client should pay their solicitor and how much a lawyer can recover from public funds. There is guidance on how the Office can get back legal costs, challenging a solicitor’s bill and how to get court costs assessed. There is also a link to decisions made by the Office on the Bailii website and daily cause lists.

Chambers Student

Online guide to becoming a lawyer produced by legal publisher Chambers & Partners and aimed at students. The site is free to access and provides profiles of law firms (based on trainee interviews) arranged by name, location or practice area. There is guidance on pursuing a career in law and the steps students need to go through to achieve this including vacation schemes, training contracts and the Legal Practice Course. The site gives an outline of the various practice areas along with tips on applications and interviews.

Women Lawyers Division

The Women Lawyers’ Division (WLD) is a Law Society group which supports and advises women solicitors in England and Wales, whether or not they are currently practising. The WLD site provides news, advice, feature articles, interviews with women lawyers and details of training events. The Division has an electronic newsletter, for which it is possible to register on the site. In 2013 the WLD absorbed the Association of Women Solcitors (AWS); there is a short history of the AWS on the website.

LawWorks

Website of LawWorks, an independent charitable association of solicitors in England and Wales dedicated to pro bono (free) legal advice: 'LawWorks' is the operating name of the Solicitors' Pro Bono Group (SPBG). The site describes the background, role and purpose of the organisation and gives details of LawWorks' projects. These include clinics providing free legal advice sessions, mediation services and free legal services aimed at the voluntary sector.

Lex Africa

Website for Lex Africa, a network of selected leading law firms throughout the countries of Africa. The site is hosted by Werksmans Attorneys in Johannesburg, South Africa. Each firm listed has information in HTML format about its staff, contact details, main areas of practice, and a guide to doing business in that particular country. Links are provided to other African business and trade sites.

Resolution

Web pages of Resolution (previously the Solicitors Family Law Association) an organisation of family law professionals set up in 1982 in the UK. Resolution's code of practice sets out the "principles of a non-confrontational approach to family law matters" and can be viewed on the site in HTML. Resolution provides support and training for its members and is active in law reform. There are details of events given on the site along with a selection of fact sheets covering topics such as divorce, cohabitation, mediation and collaborative family law.

Law Society of New South Wales

Website of the Law Society of New South Wales, the professional association for the solicitor's branch of the legal profession in the State of New South Wales, Australia. The site offers legal, professional and management resources for solicitors including access to the Law Society Journal, Caveat Bulletin, Library Catalogue, Law Society Precedents, information on professional conduct and regulation. Many of these are restricted to members only. Information aimed at the public includes advice on a number of legal topics, dealing with a lawyer and making a complaint.
