A legal research guide for Asia and the Pacific region, created by the library at the University of Sydney. Includes regional legal information as well as covering twenty-five individual jurisdictions. For each jurisdiction, there are annotated links to sources of legislation and cases, information about the legal system, information relating to international law (such as participation in treaties), and links to research guides.  

Indian Treaties Database

Advocate Khoj

Advocate Khoj is an Indian law website intended for the general public. Its main purpose is to put people with legal problems in touch with qualified lawyers, via the ‘Post your Case’ section; registration is required to use this service, but there is no charge. Advocate Khoj also provides primary and secondary Indian legislation, Indian Supreme Court judgments, official forms, a glossary and other Indian legal information.

Rules and regulations

Database of secondary legislation, both central and state, provided via the Indian Government’s web portal. States that it includes “all the Rules passed by the Parliament and the State Legislative Assemblies as well as the Sub-ordinate legislations issued by the Departments based on those Rules & Regulations”, but for some states very few instruments are currently available. The date range covered is not given, but some very old instruments (1940s onwards) are included. There is no information about amendments or revocations.

Indian Parliament

The website of the Parliament of India provides information about the lower and upper chambers, the Lok Sabha (LS) and the Rajya Sabha (RS), and about the President of India. There are profiles of MPs and a copy of the Constitution. Full text bills, committee reports, speeches and debates are also given along with schedules of parliamentary business and rules of procedure. Indian Kanoon

Kanoon is a free legal search engine providing access to Indian laws, court judgments and tribunal judgments. Kanoon has been developed by computer scientist Sushant Sinha. The site contains over 1.4 million laws along with judgements from the Supreme Court of India, 24 high courts and 17 law tribunals. Also provided are Constitutent Assembly debates and Law Commission reports.

Legal Information Institute of India

The Legal Information Institute of India (LIIofIndia) was launched in March 2011. It is a collaborative project involving several Indian law schools, assisted by the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII). The LII of India provides free access to Indian legislation (including the 1836 Indian Code and some state legislation); Indian case law (Supreme Court, most High Courts and tribunals); treaties; Law Commission reports; and legal journals.

Bar & Bench

Bar & Bench is a freely available online journal aimed at the legal profession working in India. The journal has news of legal developments in India and around the world along with feature articles, commentary, interviews and profiles of Indian law firms. The ‘Deal street’ section reports on the latest mergers, acquisitions and deals taking place in Indian law firms. Journal content can also be viewed by specific interest such as academic, corporate council, law firms, non profit and legal outsourcing. The archive is available back to 2009.
