This is the full text of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982, superseding previous conferences held in 1958 and 1960. A subsequent Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of the Convention was adopted on 28 July 1994 and entered into force on 28 July 1996. This Agreement (relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the Convention) is also included in the text. The Convention was held to establish "a legal order for the seas and oceans which will facilitate international communication, and will promote the peaceful uses of the seas and oceans, the equitable and efficient utilization of their resources, the conservation of their living resources, and the study, protection and preservation of the marine environment."
