Irish Penal Reform Trust

Website for the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT), an independent organisation campaigning for dignity, justice and humane approaches in the development and implementation of penal systems, particularly in Ireland. The site outlines the Trust's aims and mission supported by the publication onsite of Trust Policy statements on matters such as the introduction of private prisons in Ireland and sentencing in the District Court. Policy responses and submissions and relevant press stories are also provided.

Scottish Prison Service

Official website providing general information about the organisation and operation of the Scottish Prison Service. Details are provided on the structure of the service with links to all the Scottish prisons. The site lists research material published by the Research and Development Branch of the Scottish Prison Service, including some summaries of Occasional Papers. The full-text of the SPS annual report and accounts is also available in HTML format. The site includes news, site search facility and links to other relevant resources on the internet.

Ministry of Justice Japan

Website of the Japanese Ministry of Justice, the government department with primary responsibility for maintaining the rule of law and legal order in Japan. In particular it is concerned with immigration, nationality, prosecution of criminal cases, the treatment of offenders, protecting the rights of citizens, family registration and registration of real estate. The site offers some historical background on the administration of justice in Japan since the end of the Second World War.

Statewatch database

Statewatch is a non-profit voluntary organisation which monitors the state and civil liberties in the UK and the rest of Europe. The Statewatch Database contains more than 25,000 records, including news, features, pamphlets, reports, legislation, EU resolutions and agreements, details of UK parliamentary debates and those of the European Parliament and reports on European Court of Human Rights cases. Material less than 6 months old can be accessed free of charge; older materials require a subscription.

Center on Juvenile & Criminal Justice

The Center on Juvenile & Criminal Justice (CJCJ) is a non-profit organisation based in California whose aim is to advocate humane criminal justice policy and promote public safety. It is in favour of reduced use of custodial sentences. The website gives details of the CJCJ's work with young offenders which includes model programs, projects and research. There is also information about, and evaluation of, the Center's work dealing with detention diversion, jail services for the homeless and mentally ill and independent living.

Justice Policy Journal

Website of the Justice Policy Journal which is the online journal of the Center on Juvenile & Criminal Justice (CJCJ) a California based non-profit organisation working with young offenders in the criminal justice system. The journal is aimed at researchers and policymakers providing a forum dealing with current justice issues. The Justice Policy Journal is freely available in full-text on the CJCJ's website. Each article has an abstract presented in HTML along with the full-text presented in PDF format.

National Institute of Corrections

The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) a part of the United States Department of Justice. NIC provides "leadership to influence correctional policies, practices, and operations nationwide in areas of emerging interest and concern to correctional executives and practitioners as well as public policymakers." There is an online library, publications and information on training and projects.

National Institute of Corrections Library

This site provides access to the library of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) which is an agency of the US Department of Justice. The library contains books, journals, newsletters and video and audio tapes along with unpublished materials produced by correctional agencies and all NIC publications. These materials include research reports and analyses, program descriptions and evaluations and training materials. The catalogue can be searched by keyword or browsed by subject heading.

Center for Effective Public Policy

The Center for Effective Public Policy (CEPP), an American non-profit organisation, works with local, state and tribal jurisdictions in the US to improve their criminal justice systems and enhance the well-being of communities. Its website provides information about CEPP projects. It includes a collection of guides, training curriculums, frameworks and other tools and resources focusing on subjects such as collaborative justice, evidence-based decision-making, parole and probation, women in the justice system, racial equity and community engagement.
