Asian and Pacific Law Guide

A legal research guide for Asia and the Pacific region, created by the library at the University of Sydney. Includes regional legal information as well as covering twenty-five individual jurisdictions. For each jurisdiction, there are annotated links to sources of legislation and cases, information about the legal system, information relating to international law (such as participation in treaties), and links to research guides.  

State Attorney-General of Sabah

Website of the State Attorney-General of Sabah in Malaysia who is legal advisor to the state government. There is information on the role and functions of the State Attorney-General  and a profile of the current office holder (in Malay). Sabah Lawnet is the section of the site which provides access to Sabah legislation including the state constitution, full text state laws, subsidiary legislation and local authority bylaws.

Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry

The official website of the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry. Contains links to text of trade agreements involving Malaysia, particularly relating to ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations). The text of certain pieces of trade-related legislation is available to view and announcements and media releases give information on new amendments regarding trade and industry. The site can be viewed in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

Introduction to the Malaysian Legal System and Sources of Law

Online article to Malaysian sources of law written by Dr. Sharifah Suhanah Syed Ahmad who is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya in Malaysia. The guide was published in 2012 (and updated in 2014) on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The author provides an overview to past legal systems of Malaysia and their legal sources including the Malacca Sultanate and the British era.

Ministry of Finance Malaysia

Official website of the Malaysian Ministry of Finance. The site can be viewed in both Bahasa Melayu and English, but not all pages are translated. It contains information and publications about areas of the ministry’s work including taxation, the economy, the budget and housing loans. There are sections detailing legislation on these topics, although the amount of content varies – some are available only in Bahasa Melayu and appear to just list titles of acts and their relevant sections. There are several online services available, such as property valuation.

Labuan FSA official website

The Labuan Financial Services Authority is a statutory body created under the Labuan Financial Services Act 1996. It is responsible for the development and administration of the Labuan International Business and Financial Centre and acts as its central regulatory, supervisory and enforcement authority. The website gives details of the legislation and guidelines governing the business activities of the Labuan IBFC. There is also more general information about Labuan FSA (organisation chart, staff directory, mission statement) and the activities of the Labuan IBFC.

Securities Commission Malaysia

The Securities Commission is a statutory body with investigative and enforcement powers and a range of regulatory functions based around protecting the investor and encouraging and promoting the development of the securities and derivatives market in Malaysia. This is its official website and contains an overview of the Securities Commission and its work, details of relevant legislation and guidelines, information on capital market licencing, capital market data and statistics, press releases and careers information. It can be viewed in Bahasa Melayu as well as English.

Laws of Malaysia

A collection of laws in the Laws of Malaysia series, a compilation and reprint of laws published in volume form pursuant to Section 14A of the Revision of Laws Act 1968. It is the only official and authoritative publication of the laws of Malaysia. The LOM series incorporates all principal laws of Malaysia enacted after 1969 and pre-1969 laws which have been revised by the Commissioner of Law Revision. This resource is provided by the website of the Attorney General’s Chambers. The website can be viewed in Bahasa Malaysia and the text of most laws is available in both languages.

Johore Bar Committee

Official website of the Johore Bar Committee, a body representing legal practitioners in the Malaysian state of Johor. The site includes details of the members of the Committee, Secretariat (including contact details) and Sub-Committees, news and events, a history of the Johore Bar, an overview of Malaysian legal and judicial services, contact details for courts, legal offices, judicial officers and government departments, Malaysia-wide legal directories and a Public Awareness section giving details of the law in areas such as divorce and making a will.
