Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Website presenting the text of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, included on the official site of the Department of Justice Canada. The Charter is an important statement of human rights policy and is enacted as Schedule B to the Constitution Act 1982 (1982, c.79). In the UK, the Charter is Schedule B to the Canada Act 1982 (1982, c.11). The Charter is presented on the site in English and French language versions in HTML format.

Center for the Study of Human Rights, Columbia University

Website of the Center for the Study of Human Rights, Columbia University, New York. The Center was established in 1978 and seeks to promote human rights education, training and interdisciplinary research. The site presents information about the Center, its staff, board and aims. Details are provided about academic programs, the visiting scholars program, research and conferences. The Centre has two capacity building programs: the Human Rights Advocates Program, which aims to prepare leaders from the Global South and marginalized communities in the U.S.

Business and Human Rights Resource Centre

This site is produced by Christopher Avery, an international lawyer educated in the USA. He has considerable experience of ethical business research and has worked for Amnesty International. He seeks responses from companies to allegations of misconduct: thus ensuring that coverage is balanced and encouraging companies to address concerns raised by civil society. The website covers over 4000 companies, over 180 countries. Topics include discrimination, environment, poverty, development, labour, access to medicines, health and safety, security, trade.

Physicians for Human Rights

Website of Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) the international organisation which mobilises health professions and promotes the right to health for all. The site has background and organisational information about PHR and details of their campaigning work in the following areas: Darfur survival; health action AIDS; health and justice for youth; campaign against torture and the campaign to ban landmines. There is also information on their International Forensic Program which uses medical and scientific methods to investigate and expose violations of human rights.

Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law

Web pages of the academic institution based at Lund University, Sweden, and named after Raoul Wallenberg, the distinguished Swedish diplomat of the Second World War. The Institute was founded in 1984 and promotes research, training and academic education in the fields of human rights and humanitarian law. The site outlines the Institute's academic and research programmes and gives details of the Institute's work in Central and South East Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East concerned primarily with human rights and humanitarian law.

Human Rights in China

Website of the human rights advocacy organisation, Human Rights in China (HRIC), an international non-governmental organisation. Founded by Chinese scholars and scientists in 1989 and based in New York, HRIC works to promote a better knowledge and advocacy of human rights within the People's Republic of China. The site has information on HRIC's work covering legal reform, technology and human rights and ethical globalisation including articles, resources and news briefings.

National Human Rights Commission, India

Website of the National Human Rights Commission, India. A body set up by Indian statute in 1993, the Commission has a legal mandate to protect and promote human rights in India. The site includes information on the composition of the Commission and a full-text copy of the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993.There are selected human rights case summaries and details of programmes of work being undertaken by the Commission covering issues such as the abolition of bonded labour, the right to food and the rights of the disabled.

Canadian Human Rights Tribunal

Website for the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal available in English and French. The Tribunal applies the rights of equality, equal opportunity, fair treatment, and non-discrimination to cases referred to it by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The site provides a database of decisions from 1979 onwards in full-text HTML format. The decisions can be searched by year or by complainant's name, and a free-text search engine is available which searches the content of the whole site.

Association for Civil Rights in Israel

This independent, non-partisan Association was seeks to strengthen Israel's commitment to civil liberties and human rights. Its website provides summaries of cases ACRI has been involved with relating to equality, religious pluralism and freedom of conscience, freedom of expression, freedom of information, human dignity and due process of law. It also has information about the Association's projects, education programmes and public outreach services. There are also articles, press releases and reports to download. The site has Hebrew, Arabic and English interfaces.

New Zealand Human Rights Commission

Website of the Human Rights Commission in New Zealand, offering background information on the function, personnel and organisation of the Commission with notes on the complaints process. The site offers opinions and decisions on complaints, texts of research papers, reports and submissions from the HRC and electronic versions of press releases, publications, and recent human rights speeches and addresses. Information is also provided on the international human rights movement with links to other human rights sites. Interfaces for a range of languages are provided.
