Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law

The Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM) is a Ukrainian think tank made up of media and human rights lawyers and policy experts. CEDEM is concerned with the protection of freedom of speech and the human rights of journalists. Its work includes reform of media laws, support to citizens involved with freedom of information cases, and the provision of courses on media law in Ukraine. The Library section of the site provides summaries of Ukrainian media legislation. The site can be viewed in English or Ukrainian.

International Forum for Responsible Media

This blog is provided by the International Forum for Responsible Media (Inforrm) and was set up by media lawyers to debate issues of media responsibility. Blog posts provide news and comment on media cases and on legal developments.There are tables of media, defamation and privacy cases including links to the judgements on Bailii (British and Irish Legal and Information Institute). There are also links to legal materials and blogs on related subjects including media, data protection, privacy, freedom of information and journalism.

Hungarian media laws in Europe

Report on media laws in Hungary published and made freely available online by the Center for Media and Communication Studies at the Central European University in Budapest. The report analyses Hungary’s new media laws to assess how far they conform to European media regulation standards and compares aspects of the Hungarian system to those of other EU countries. Topics covered in the report include independence of the Hungarian media authority, media regulation, public service media and powers of the media authority. Maldives Department of Information

The official website of the Department of Information in the Republic of Maldives (part of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture), formally the Ministry of Legal Reform, Information and Arts. The Downloads section contains links to PDFs of law and regulations, mainly relating to information and media but including the country’s constitution. Most documents are in Dhiveti, but the constitution is in English.

Rethinking Music: a briefing book

This publication by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University consists of papers presented at the Rethink Music Conference in April 2011. The book is on music law and policy, focusing on changes to the music industry brought about by the shift to online music consumption. There are papers dealing with cloud-based music services, music rights clearances and public media and voluntary payment models.

5RB

5RB is a set of barristers specialising in media and entertainment law; areas covered include defamation, privacy, breach of confidence, intellectual property, sport, publishing and harassment. The 5RB website provides a collection of case reports, with commentary, which may be searched by key word or browsed by year, party name or topic. It also includes a collection of articles by barristers from 5RB.

Institute for Information Law

Web pages for a research facility based in the Faculty of Law at the University of Amsterdam. The site explains the aims, work and fields of study undertaken at the Institute. Research teams explore the legal issues relating to intellectual property, industrial property, freedom of information and expression, privacy, media law, telecommunications, advertising and consumer law, and e-commerce on a private and commissioned basis. Research papers and other publications on these topics are published online on the site.

Entertainment Law Resources for Film, TV and Multimedia Producers

This site is compiled by Mark Litwak, a lawyer based in California and specialising in entertainment law. It was originally established in 1995. It includes a series of articles and advice written by Mark Litwak on various aspects of film making and multimedia. There is a blog with regular topical posts. And links to information about books and software, FAQs, and a directory of film festivals.

Gambling Commission

The Gaming Commission (formerly know as the Gaming Board of Great Britain) is responsible for the regulation of gambling in the UK. This covers all forms of lotteries, gaming machines, betting, casinos, bingo and the National Lottery. The website provides free access to information about the remit and activities of the Commission. It includes press releases, regulations, legislation and information on licenses relating to all forms of gambling. The site also includes some government sponsored research papers on problem gamblers and gambling addiction.
