The article was originally published in 2010 on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. There is an introduction to the origins of the African Union (AU) which started off as the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The article provides information on the requirements for membership and on the objectives and principles of the AU which are enshrined in the Constitutive Act. The author also outlines the roles and responsibilities of the institutions of the AU including the Assembly, the Executive Council, the Permanent Representative Committee, the Peace and Security Council, the Pan-African Parliament, the Court of Justice and the Economic, Social and Cultural Council. Information on the status of the AU treaties and a list of key documents is also given.
