Researching the Right to Housing

Online guide to resources on housing rights written by S M Atia Naznin who is a lecturer at the School of Law, BRAC University, in Bangladesh. The guide was published in 2018 (and updated in 2024) on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The author provides an introduction and links to relevant sections of the UN International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights along with other related international and regional  instruments.

Homeless Link

Directory of research and good practice guidance regarding homelessness in the UK, with abstracts; also gives links to the full text of each publication (if available). Has a search facility, an annotated index of keywords, an index of publishers and a tag cloud. The ‘legislation’ keyword page gives a brief overview of legislation in this area, with links to both legislation and commentary. The site also provides a few news items.

Arden Chambers

London-based barristers’ chambers specialising in housing, local government and property law. The Arden Chambers website has an ‘information centre’ section which provides legal news (‘eflashes’) regarding these areas of law; articles and briefings by Arden barristers; responses to government consultations; and other resources.

Ombudsman Says

The Ombudsman Says website is a joint initiative of HouseMark and the ombudsman schemes dealing with housing issues: the Housing Ombudsman Service; Local Government Ombudsman; Public Services Ombudsman for Wales and the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman. The site provides free access to case digests for the housing sector. Case digests can be browsed by ombudsman service, topic or type of tenure. Topics include tenancy management, adaptations, anti-social behaviour, housing benefit, repairs and rent and service charges. The cases can also be searched by keyword.

Housing Ombudsman Service

The Housing Ombudsman Service provides an independent service for dealing with complaints made against landlords and housing agents in England, including complaints against social landlords and housing associations. Its website provides information on the work of the Ombudsman and guidance on making a complaint. It also has a link to a selection of case digests and a register of social landlords in England.

Landlord Law

Website of Landlord Law, a subscription website produced by Tessa Shepperson, a solicitor based in Norwich specialising in residential landlord and tenant work. The site has sections for landlords and tenants, together with information about tenancy agreements, rent arrears and eviction. There are also links to housing cases and legislation. Free content includes feature articles on specific aspects of landlord and tenant law, a questions and answers page, news stories and book reviews and Law Commission documents focusing on housing law reform.

Painsmith Landlord and Tenant Blog

This blog, focusing on residential landlord and tenant law, is provided by PainSmith Solicitors, a UK-based practice specialising in this area of law. The site includes news and comment on the latest legal developments, legislation, guidance and case law. Posts can be searched or browsed back to October 2008, when the blog started, and tags include Housing Act 1988, Housing Act 2004, Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, regulations, fees, rent and litigation. Blog posts include links to cases and legislation; the site also has links to other housing law and landlord and tenant law blogs.
