This website is the National Office for the Judiciary in Hungary. It provides information on the judiciary and on the Hungarian legal system including civil and criminal proceedings. The site also covers the appointment and training of judges and gives information on developments such as digitisation of court procedures. The site can be viewed in Hungarian and English.

Hungarian Civil Liberties Union

The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) is a human rights NGO founded in 1994. HCLU monitors legislation, provides free legal aid and training and campaigns to raise awareness around human rights issues. The site has information on a range of human rights issues in Hungary including freedom of information, right to self-determination, disability rights, patients’ rights, drug policy, freedom of expression and data protection.

Hungarian Bar Association

Website of the Hungarian Bar Association the body responsible for representing and regulating the legal profession in Hungary. There is information on the administration and work of the Association and contact details for the regional bar associations. Legislation regulating the legal profession is also given. The site can be viewed in Hungarian only.

Constitution of Hungary

Electronic copy of the 2011 Hungarian Constitution (updated to 2016) made freely available online by the Comparative Constitutions Project at the University of Texas at Austin. The Constitution is provided in PDF and includes chapters on freedom and responsibility, the role of the President, government and National Assembly, the courts and the defence forces.

Legal Frameworks for Nuclear Activities

This part of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) site provides information on the legal frameworks for nuclear activities in OECD and NEA member and partner countries. Country profiles cover a range of topics including the regulatory regime, regulatory authorities and advisory bodies. There is information on nuclear installations, radioactive waste management, radioactive substances and equipment, non-proliferation and transport. Links are given to primary legislation and to other NEA publications. The NEA is part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Hungarian media laws in Europe

Report on media laws in Hungary published and made freely available online by the Center for Media and Communication Studies at the Central European University in Budapest. The report analyses Hungary’s new media laws to assess how far they conform to European media regulation standards and compares aspects of the Hungarian system to those of other EU countries. Topics covered in the report include independence of the Hungarian media authority, media regulation, public service media and powers of the media authority. Supreme Court of Hungary

Official website of the Hungarian Supreme Court (Kúria) which is offered in Hungarian with an English interface. Information provided in English covers the history, organisation and jurisdiction of the court and the reform of the Hungarian judicial system following the country’s change to a democratic system of government . A selection of civil, criminal and administrative decisions of the court are provided in full text, in English.

Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights

Website of the Hungarian Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights the body established by the Fundamental Law of Hungary to protect civil rights in Hungary. The site provides profiles of the Commissioner and deputies and an organisational structure. There is guidance on lodging a complaint and ongoing cases can be viewed in Hungarian on the site. Full text annual reports are also provided along with a selection of reports on topics including child-friendly justice, refugee homelessness and unaccompanied minors and human rights related documents.
