African Institute of International Law

The African Institute of International Law (AIIL) promotes the dissemination of international law in Africa and seeks to enhance the rule of law in Africa. Its website gives details of AIIL workshops, summer schools, capacity-building projects and other events. It also makes available the African Law Series: compilations of African legal instruments including AU/OAU treaties, declarations and resolutions (see Media Center – Resources).

Tanzania Legal Information Institute

Website of the Tanzania Legal Information Institute (TanzLII), a project of the Tanzanian Judiciary, providing free access to Tanzania law in partnership with AfricanLII and Laws.Africa. Judgements from the various high courts and courts of appeal can be browsed by court and searched by date, name or judge. Tanzanian consolidated legislation, updated to 30th November 2019, can be browsed by title and viewed in full. The Tanzania Government Gazette is available from 2006 to date along with Judiciary of Tanzania publications and guidelines.

East African Court of Justice

The East African Court of Justice is the judicial body of the East African Community. Its website provides judgments from 2005 onwards; they are listed in alphabetical order and can be filtered by year and/or type of case. The News section of the site provides lists of pending cases as well as press releases. The website also makes available procedural rules, the Protocol on the Establishment of the East African Community Common Market, the Protocol on the Establishment of the East African Customs Union and the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community.

African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights

Official website of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights which was established by a protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights in1998. The African Court is based in Tanzania and started work in 2006. It has jurisdiction over all cases submitted to it regarding the interpretation and application of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and deals with human rights violations perpetrated by African Union Member States. The site has profiles of judges and information on the history and role of the Court.

East African Community

The East African Community is an intergovernmental regional organisation which seeks to promote social, economic and political cooperation between the African nations of Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Kenya. Its website provides information on the aims of the organisation, its members and current activities. It provides free access to recent press releases, communiques, annual reports, full-text treaties and other documents. Topics covered include free trade and fiscal policies in Africa, economic aid, health policy, democratic and political development.

Law Reform Commission of Tanzania

Official website of the Law Reform Commission of Tanzania whose role is to keep under review all aspects of the law in Tanzania. Gives historical information about the Commission, lists the Commissioners and provides position papers, reports, discussion papers and other publications. Also includes a collection of Tanzanian laws from 2004 to 2010. There are Kiswahili and English versions of the site, but much of the documentation provided is in English only.
