United Nations Administrative Law

Online guide to the law governing employment relations and disputes within the United Nations written by Cyril Emery who is the Librarian of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The guide was published in 2022 on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School Program at the New York University School of Law. The author outlines the various sources of law and provides links to fundamental documents, research resources, UN courts and tribunals and legal decisions.

Ask Dag

Ask DAG provides answers to hundreds of frequently-asked questions about the United Nations. The answers are compiled by the staff of the UN’s Dag Hammarskjőld Library. Ask DAG groups questions and answers into these categories: UN Facts, General Assembly, Security Council, Human Rights, Library. It is searchable, or it can be browsed by subject and/or language (English, French and Spanish). There is also a live chat facility.

International Atomic Energy Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was set up in 1957 and has its headquarters in Vienna. It is a international organisation within the UN System. The IAEA website provides a wide range of information about the role and structure of the agency and details of its programmes and education/training. It also gives full-text access to publications and official documents: nuclear treaties, reports, country factsheets, the IAEA Legal Series, the quarterly IAEA Bulletin and other material, including digitised older titles from around the 1960s onwards.

Universal Postal Union (UPU)

The Universal Postal Union (Union Postal Universelle) was created in 1874 and is located in Berne, Switzerland. It is the second-oldest international organization in the world. The purpose of the UPU is to provide a primary forum for the postal service sector and to ensure that a network of up-to-date services is provided. Its website provides information about the structure and role of the organisation and makes available its documentation and publications. A terminology database, Termpost, provides a multilingual vocabulary relating to postal services.

United Nations Population Fund

The United Nations Population Fund, or UNFPA, is the UN agency responsible for advancing sexual and reproductive health. It also focuses on issues such as child marriage, female genital mutilation and gender-based violence. The Fund’s website describes its work and makes available reports, briefings, guidance, statistical data, news and other material. The site is provided in English, Spanish or French.

United Nations iLibrary

Digital repository for UN sale publications, launched in February 2016. The publications can be read for free online, but a subscription is required to download pdf versions. The collection consists of books, studies, reports and other sale publications; for resolutions, meeting records and other official documents, see the UN Official Document System. A wide range of subjects is covered; law titles include the Law of the Sea Bulletin and the Yearbook of the International Law Commission (recent issues only; older issues are available free on other UN websites).

Official Document System (ODS) of the United Nations

This site provides a search engine for the official UN document repository. It covers all types of official UN documentation, including resolutions of the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and Trusteeship Council from 1946 onwards, and documentation from meetings of the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies. Documents are available in the six official languages of the UN - Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The site search offers a simple key word search option, an advanced search and links to popular searches.

Searching through Systems: Research Guide for UN Criminal Tribunals

Online guide to international criminal tribunals written by Anthony Bestafka-Cruz who is a law student at University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt) and Managing Editor for the Berkeley Journal of International Law. The guide was published in 2012 (and updated by Devan Orr in 2024) on the Globalex website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School at the New York University School of Law.

This UN website brings together the key UN legal publications and provides a search facility covering all of them. The following publications are available: Yearbook of the International Law Commission; United Nations Juridical Yearbook; Reports of International Arbitral Awards; Proceedings of Diplomatic Conferences; UNCITRAL Yearbook; UNCITRAL publications; Repertory of Practice of United Nations Organs; Repertoire of Practice of the Security Council; and Summaries of Judgments, Advisory Opinions and Orders of the International Court of Justice.
