Lloyd’s Acts and Bylaws

This section of the Lloyd’s website provides free access to copies of the Lloyd’s acts and byelaws currently in force. Lloyd’s - the world’s leading specialist insurance market – is governed by the Lloyd’s Acts of 1871, 911, 1951 and 1982. The Council of Lloyd’s manages and supervises the market and does this, in part, by passing byelaws which can be viewed in full on the site. Underwriting requirements made by the byelaws are also available along with codes and other standards and regulations required by Lloyd’s.

Motor Insurers’ Bureau

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) is a non-profit-making company that compensates victims of uninsured and untraced drivers in the UK. Its website makes available the agreements between the MIB and the Department of Transport regarding these compensation claims. It also provides a database of car insurance data, the Motor Insurance Database. Forms, guidance, news and other resources are also available.

British Insurance Law Association

BILA is an organsiation for insurers, insurance brokers, academic lawyers and practising lawyers; its membership is drawn from Britain and also from overseas. As well as being an association in its own right, it is the British chapter of the Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA). BILA’s website describes its work and gives details of its events, but most of the content - such as the Journal and the Research pages - is restricted to members.

Compliance Online

Compliance Online is a subscription website providing information on banking, insurance, governance, financial crime and international affairs. The site includes news, comment and analysis and in-depth articles. Links are given to FSA (Financial Services Authority) papers, consultation documents and policy statements. The compliance timeline gives details of and links to UK, EU and international legal and regulatory documents covering each subject.

DMC's Case Notes

Website produced by David Martin-Clark who is a Shipping, Transport and Insurance Consultant. The site provides a selection of case notes covering recent shipping and insurance cases. Case notes include citations, keywords and summaries. Shipping cases are further sub-divided by topics such as admiralty, arbitration and carriage of goods. New case notes can be emailed if you register on the site. There are also biographical details relating to David Martin-Clark and information on other contributors.

British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission Legislation Library

British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (BVI-FSC) website provides access to full-text legislation dealing with banking, finance, business, insurance and money laundering issues. The legislation can be browsed or searched using the site search engine. It is also possible to specify which division the legislation relates to such as banking and fiduciary, shipping, insurance or investment. Legislation is presented in full-text in PDF format.

Insurance and Reinsurance Judgements

Collection of insurance and reinsurance judgements made freely available on the Elborne Mitchell website. Elborne Mitchell are a London law firm specialising in insurance, reinsurance, shipping, commercial, regulatory, A.R.T. (Alternative Risk Transfer), employment and e-commerce matters. The judgements can be browsed by date (most recent first) or searched by keyword. The collection extends back to the end of 1997 with each record giving the case name, date, court, judge and a case summary.

ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section

Website of the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) which is a section of the American Bar Association. The site has organisational information including details of committees, events, discussion groups and membership information. There is a list of recently published books and separate sections aimed at young lawyers and students. Details are given of TIPS journals along with full text (PDF) access to TortSource the TIPS newsletter.
