A digital version of the index is freely available. It charts the development of legal research interests in the UK in the 20th Century, details early work by many influential legal scholars, and reveals topics of recurring currency - providing themes and ideas for further research and fresh approaches. Links to available print and online theses are being added to the digital version.

Foreword to Legal Research in the United Kingdom 1905-1984

It is important for research students and their supervisors to be able to find out whether previous research has been carried out on the same subject. In 1961 the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies published the second edition of a List of Legal Research Topics, covering completed theses and dissertations for which degrees had been awarded between 1935 and 1961. A supplement brought the list up to 1966. This work supersedes the earlier publications and contains a list of completed legal research topics from the earlier years of the twentieth century to 31 July 1984.

The two earlier volumes together contained 832 titles. This list contains nearly 2,700 titles. It covers degrees awarded by all United Kingdom universities and by the Council for National Academic Awards. Degrees were not necessarily awarded in a Faculty of Law, and the list covers some topics in related fields.

The Institute is grateful for the many persons, at universities and colleges throughout the country, who have supplied the information.
